How to cleanse your crystals

Keep your crystals bright! A quick class in how to cleanse your crystals and keep those spiritual vibrations fresh.

If you’re like us, then you love the many varied ways in which crystals can enhance your life. But just like people, crystals need a little TLC to keep them at their best.

You should cleanse crystals when they first come to you – to clear any energies they may have picked up on their journey to you and give you both a fresh start. You should also cleanse crystals you wear or keep on you about once a month, and those you handle less frequently about once a season. Or, use your intuition and cleanse them whenever you sense they need it.

Here’s how to refresh your beloved crystals and ensure their energies keep flowing.

Smoke

Smoke is a great way to cleanse your crystals and avoid potential water damage, but be sure you have adequate ventilation before a smoke cleanse – you don’t want your fire alarm going off, never mind any breathing irritation!

You can smudge your crystals with sage, lavender, dragon’s blood or mugwort.

You can also use incense and set up a special space in which to cleanse your crystals regularly. At Suzie K we sell a wide range of gorgeous natural incense that is perfect for cleansing crystals.

Smoke shifts the vibrations of the air around the crystal and enables it to release any energies that need releasing. Sage smoke also releases negatively charged ions which help balance out energies from electrical interference, and is literally cleansing – reducing bacteria in the air. The aromatic nature of sage and incense smoke also helps you to relax and process any of your own negative energy, which improves your bond with your crystal.

Essential oils

If you don’t fancy burning sage, lavender or dragons blood to cleanse your crystals, then you can also use essential oils. Put a few drops of essential oils into a diffuser and run your crystal through the evaporating oil or steam to cleanse your crystal in the same way as through smoke.

Water

You can cleanse some crystals with water, but not all. As a rule, any crystal softer than a 5 on the Mohs (hardness) scale should not be put into water, as it will dissolve or crack over time – these include Angelite, Azurite, Calcite, Fluorite, Malachite, Opal, Rhodocrosite and Selenite. Some crystals with elements that can rust or release chemicals should also be kept dry – these include Hematite, Magnetite and Jade. Avoid using water on rough crystals such as geodes and save it for polished specimens only.

You can still cleanse even sensitive crystals with water, however. Try placing your crystals next to a bowl of water on a windowsill overnight in the moonlight.

If you do want to cleanse your crystals using water, then the best way is to pass them under running water – try to avoid hard water, mineral water, or rainwater, as the minerals in them can damage crystals. You can also mist water onto your crystals with a spray bottle full of non-mineral water, and let them air dry. A good tip is to put a clear quartz crystal in the bottle to soften the water and give it an energy boost.

Sound

Sound is a lovely way to cleanse your crystals. Use any form of reverberating instrument – such as a singing bowl, bell, chime or tuning fork – and visualise your crystals releasing their unwanted energies as the sound washes over them.

Light

Both moonlight and sunlight can be used to refresh your crystals.

A full moon is best – place your crystals on a windowsill overnight where they’ll get the most from the moon’s rays. If you put them on a Selenite bowl or near a Selenite crystal, then the cleansing properties of Selenite will reinforce the moon cleansing.

Sunlight is a great crystal cleanser as well, but be a little more cautious. Some crystals – such as Amethyst, Aventurine, Fluorite, Rose Quartz and Smokey Quartz - can fade in colour from direct sun contact, so limit direct sun exposure to a few minutes at a time. Also remember that clear quartz can magnify sun rays so don’t leave it unattended in case of fire!

Contact

You can place your crystals overnight on a bed of sage leaves or rice for negative energies to be absorbed. The bed acts to ground and balance the energy of your crystals.

If you use rice, to avoid wasting it, you can afterwards just cleanse the rice thoroughly with water to clear any energies it has absorbed and then cook and eat it as normal.

Other crystals

Both clear quartz and selenite are very powerful energising crystals that do not need cleansing themselves (although you absolutely can cleanse them, in order to bond more fully with them). You can also use them to cleanse other crystals, by placing them touching and then leaving them overnight.

A final (important) tip!

When doing any cleansing though, one of the most important things is to focus your intention and pour your own good energy into your crystals, to refresh them and bond with them and keep them working alongside you in harmony.
